SAV is a file extension used for the saved date of SPSS (Statistical Package for the Social Sciences). SPSS is used for statistical analysis, initially released in 1968, and was purchased by IBM in 2009. SAV files contain binary data which can only be used on the platform that created the file. If migrating the file to another platform, it SPSS lets you also save to a large number of other file types: spreadsheets, other statistical software etc. With the dialog you simply select the type you want. If you would like to perform the same operation, with often additional options, see the SPSS manual and look up the SAVE TRANSLATE command. SPSS can read Stata data files. A Stata data file can be read in SPSS either via pull-down menu or via syntax using the get stata file command.
